PE and Sports

At Valley Invicta Primary School at Holborough Lakes we believe all children should have the opportunity to live healthy and active lives. A positive experience of sport and physical activity at a young age can build a lifetime habit of participation.

We are proud to have ahcieved the Gold School Games Mark award for our commitment and engagement in the school games.

Physical activity has numerous benefits for children’s physical health, as well as their mental wellbeing and children who are physically active are happier, more resilient and more trusting of their peers. Ensuring that pupils have access to sufficient daily activity can also have wider benefits for pupils and schools, improving behaviour as well as enhancing academic achievement.

The chief medical officer advises that children should be active for up to 60 minutes per day and schools are responsible for 30 minutes per day.

Using the Primary PE and Sport Premium funding we can ensure that children meet this target. This Government funding should be used to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of the PE, physical activity and sport offered by schools.

This means that schools use the premium to:

  • develop or add to the PE, physical activity and sport that your school provides
  • build capacity and capability within the school to ensure that improvements made now will benefit pupils joining the school in future years

Schools should use the premium to secure improvements in the 5 key indicators.

  1. The engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity - the Chief Medical Officer guidelines recommend that all children and young people aged 5 to 18 engage in at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day, of which 30 minutes should be in school
  2. The profile of PE and sport is raised across the school as a tool for whole-school improvement
  3. Increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport
  4. Broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils
  5. Increased participation in competitive sport

The intent of our PE curriculum is to deliver a curriculum which is accessible to all and that will maximise the development of every child’s ability and achievement in the area of PE enabling them to know more about physical activity and keeping healthy, remember more about the physical activity they participate in and learn about and understand how to use and apply this knowledge to impact upon their own physical activity, participation and healthy lifestyle.

To build a P.E curriculum which enables children to develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities which results in pupils knowing more, remembering more and understanding how the knowledge and skills can be applied in their own physical activity and healthy lifestyle.

To build a curriculum that encourages and provides opportunities for all children to lead healthy, active lives. To enable them to know more, remember more and understand more about the positives
involved in healthy lifestyle.

Your School Games Mark

Valley Invicta Primary School was awarded the Your School Games GOLD award for our PE and Sport provision in 2021/22 and 2023.

The School Games Mark is a government-led awards scheme launched in 2012 to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community. Participating in this process allows schools to evaluate their PE provision and assists them in developing an action plan for future progress.

PE in EYFS

The teaching sequence in PE

Every year group’s units of work must include:

  • ‘The Big Picture’ – setting the PE learning that is about to take place within the chronology of pupils PE learning and skill development to date. Starting with what the children know, understand, are able to do and able to say.
  • Review most recent learning in PE.
  • Specific key vocabulary and its meaning.
  • Provide opportunities for the children to work interactively
  •  Provide opportunities for children to critically review their own work and that of others.
  • Individual reflection on the learning and skill development that has taken place.

Assessment

In order to help children progress through the skills of the PE curriculum, they are assessed throughout PE lessons and at the end of each PE unit. Assessment tools allow teachers and pupils to measure their skills and fitness levels being achieved in PE classes. They demonstrate what the students know, what they can do and what they need to do next. Effective assessment in physical education engages supports and motivates pupils to become competent, confident, creative and reflective movers. It can support and encourage young people to work together in order to excel in physically demanding and competitive activities.

Holborough’s approach to assessment is meaningful and embedded throughout a high quality physical education curriculum; which enables learners to make progress and improve their attainment. Using the Get Set 4 PE scheme along side formative and summative assessments, children are graded Bronze, Silver or Gold against statement skills that will establish their progress in that unit.

Orienteering

We are pleased to announce that we are now working with the British Orienteering society to create new and exciting opportunities for the children. Orienteering is an exciting and challenging outdoor sport that exercises mind and body. The aim is to navigate between control points marked on an orienteering map. In competitive orienteering the challenge is to complete the course in the quickest time choosing your own best route. At VIPS Holborough Lakes we have been lucky to have a school map created for us and have markers placed around the school site ready for the children to explore. With new software we are developing new courses to support the learning in maths, geography and PE.

  • Intra Events - Half termly all pupils will have access to competing against pupils in school.
  • Displays -  Display in school will celebrate involvement in P.E.
  • Clubs -  A range of free (and paid) clubs will allow all children to access P.E outside of school.

Impact:

  • Cross Curricular links - The PE SOW / policy makes links with other subjects including Science, PSHE and Maths.
  • Daily Mile - The Daily Mile is actively promoted and completed consistently by all children and modelled by staff.
  • Ping Pong Club - Lunchtime ping pong club to target the less active children.
  • Healthy eating visitors.
  • Sporting achievement certificates - Good sporting behaviour is awarded in celebration assembly.
