Evacuee experience
On Tuesday 23 September, Years 5 and 6 enjoyed an immersive evacuee experience at the Kent and Sussex Steam Railway in Tenterden. Dressed in evacuee costumes including identification tags, the children boarded the train bound for a mystery destination!
On the train, we had the privilege to meet people who had actually been evacuated during WW2 and ask them questions about their experiences.
When we arrived at the station in ‘Wales’, the children were greeted by a cast of characters including billeting officers, police officers and host ‘parents’, but we had to get back on the train quickly when the air raid siren went off! After eating our lunches on board the train, we participated in a range of other activities including a food rationing talk, an encounter with Viv the Spiv, a treasure hunt around the station and an exhibition of WW2 memorabilia.
April: 'I enjoyed the exhibition. It was really fascinating because you got to see a lot of items from WW2. I really liked the camera – it looked completely different to the ones we have now!'
Hameerah: 'I loved being on the steam train and meeting the real-life evacuees. I asked the lady how being an evacuee affected her life and she said that because she couldn’t see her parents for a very long time it made her sad.'
Andrew: 'I loved today. My favourite part was seeing the RAF uniform.'
